We made it! Scrat had to play, too...
We did our part extending the life of this leaning wonder!
If you look closely, about 4 levels up you can see where the builders tried to correct the tilt by tilting the new construction straighter, then again with the very top level!
Very cool to see!
This is a complex...the Duomo (cathedral), the bell tower (leaning tower), and the baptistry.
The Duomo (started in 1063) was closed, so we couldn't see that. It would have been about the 29th cathedral of the trip....so we didn't cry too hard.
The baptisty (started in 1153), however, was open.
Most people don't know that it is also leaning...and oddly, the opposite way from the tower (and not as much). It's huge...the largest in Italy when it was built. The ground under this complex, which is only 5 miles from the Ligurian Sea, has been described as 'soft, like lasagne'. Leave it to Italians to describe everything in food terms!
