Elke and Edgar's beautiful backyard and the wonderful church with the ubiquitous 1/4 hour bells. Such a beautiful sound! The seeming continous bells lend a rhythm to life here. German life runs really does run like clock-work! The bells and frequency of clocks in public places makes me somehow more able to relax. Makes sense. In fact, EVERYTHING here makes such sense here. So...civilized. It's like they've had a long time to figure out how to do things and are in it for the long haul (houses out of concrete) compared to USA's youth and subsequent penchant for instant gratification. By observing people, it's clear there is little tolerance for inefficiencies....like slow drivers, late trains (yes, another late train this morn), ticket machines that won't let us buy a ticket for a different day. The only thing so far that made no sense...a traffic report on the radio warning drivers of children playing on the autobahn!
So, as we wave goodbye to Elke and Edgar
we thank them and Thorsten for being such generous hosts. I think Elke is going home to take a nap!
So, here now we sit at the airport, awaiting our Berlin flight with a cappuccino.
So...civilized!
